Bluetooth 5.4 Deep Dive: Auracast, PAwR & What It Means For Product Teams

A practical, engineering-led breakdown of Bluetooth 5.4 features—Auracast broadcast audio, Periodic Advertising with Responses, and how to plan your next BLE product around them.

Bluetooth 5.4 Deep Dive: Auracast, PAwR & What It Means For Product Teams

Bluetooth 5.4, ratified in early 2023 and shipping in mainstream silicon since 2024, is the most consequential update to BLE since 5.0. Two features in particular—Auracast broadcast audio and Periodic Advertising with Responses (PAwR)—unlock entirely new product categories. This article unpacks them from a product and engineering perspective.

What is new in Bluetooth 5.4?

  • Periodic Advertising with Responses (PAwR) for bidirectional, low-power topologies
  • Encrypted Advertising Data (EAD) for privacy-preserving beacons
  • Improved support for Auracast broadcast audio at scale
  • Subrating for connection power optimisation

Auracast: public audio without pairing

Auracast lets a single transmitter (a TV at the gym, a PA system at the airport, a museum guide stand) broadcast audio to an unlimited number of compatible receivers—earbuds, hearing aids, public earbuds. Users tap or scan to join the broadcast. No pairing, no app required. The killer use cases include silent gyms, multi-language tour guides, accessibility for hearing-impaired travellers, and bar/restaurant TVs.

PAwR: bidirectional fleets at industrial scale

Electronic Shelf Labels (ESL) in supermarkets, smart parking sensors, large industrial fleets of BLE devices have historically been one-way broadcasters. PAwR adds a synchronised response window after each periodic advert, letting one gateway interact with thousands of devices using a fraction of the power and airtime of classic connections.

How TechNexusGen designs for BT 5.4 today

Our hardware team has shipped BT 5.4 products on Nordic nRF54L15, Silicon Labs EFR32BG24, and TI CC2340 silicon. We focus on co-designing the RF front end, antenna, and firmware power profile from day one. Expect 25–40% longer battery life on coin cells when migrating from BT 5.0 to 5.4, with the same form factor.

Should you wait for Bluetooth 6.0?

Bluetooth 6.0 brings channel sounding for accurate ranging, but mainstream silicon and certification are still 12–18 months out for most categories. For 99% of teams, BT 5.4 is the right target through 2026.
